Apple Music on Echo speakers is the best gift Apple will give its fans this year

Macworld - Fri, 11/30/2018 - 10:43

While this time last year Apple Music fans were lamenting the fact that they wouldn’t be getting HomePod in time for Christmas, there’s a lot more to cheer about this year. According to USA Today, Echo devices will be getting Apple Music support beginning the week of December 17, making it the first third-party smart speaker to fully support the streaming music service.

While there’s no special Echo rate—the service will still cost $10 a month or $99 a year, with the same student and family tiers—support for Amazon devices opens Apple Music up to a huge untapped audience. But it’s even better for Apple Music’s current subscribers. Now they don’t have to buy a HomePod or use a clunky AirPlay workaround to pump their Apple Music playlists through a smart speaker.

Ukraine bars entry to Russian men of combat age, EU sees renewal of sanctions on Russia

Top Stories - Fri, 11/30/2018 - 09:57

Ukraine announced it was barring entry to Russian men between 16-60 years and a senior state security official said Kiev was considering whether to respond in kind with "mirror actions" to the Black Sea incident. Earlier, in a move applauded in Kiev, U.S. President Donald Trump called off a meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Argentina to signal Washington's disapproval of Russian behavior in the naval clash with Ukraine. The Russian rouble, which is sensitive to events that might lead to new sanctions being imposed on Russia, fell on news of the canceled meeting.

Merkel protege suggests blockade of Russian ships over Ukraine crisis

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who is leading the race to succeed Merkel as leader of her ruling conservatives, also said Germany must be ready to take more responsibility in foreign policy and to spend more on defense. Russia seized the Ukrainian vessels and their crews on Sunday near Crimea, the Ukrainian region which Moscow annexed in 2014, over what it said was their illegal entry into Russian waters, which Ukraine denies. "If it's confirmed that the aggression came from Russia ... then I think there must be a clear answer," Kramp-Karrenbauer told Reuters in a television interview.

Trump demand that asylum seekers wait in Mexico may turn on legal clause

Top Stories - Fri, 11/30/2018 - 09:10

Last week, Trump said that migrants who seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexican border would stay in Mexico until their claims were individually approved in U.S. courts, although Mexico's incoming government denied they had struck any deal. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment about the proposal. Keeping refugees in Mexico for the years it can take to resolve an asylum claim would be a stark break with long-standing practice, which allows asylum seekers to remain in the United States while their case plays out.

Why you should use a VPN on a public Wi-Fi network

Macworld - Fri, 11/30/2018 - 08:00

When you connect to a free or paid public Wi-Fi network, you may notice that some redirection takes place. Instead of taking you to a website you intended to visit or retrieving your email, Apple cleverly inserts a Wi-Fi portal pop-up or screen in both iOS and macOS. On that screen, you can login or agree to terms and conditions for use of the network and proceed.

Apple makes this portal page appear when your iPhone, iPad, or Mac can’t reach an Apple site directly after you joined that network. The operating system understands that something is standing in your way, and it’s almost always a portal page that Apple can repackage to make it easier for you to spot.

CyberLink PhotoDirector 10 Ultra review: Intriguing alternative to consumer Mac photo editors

Macworld - Fri, 11/30/2018 - 07:00

CyberLink PhotoDirector is kind of a sleeper in the Mac pantheon of desktop image editors. It competes with Apple Photos, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator, Luminar, and other consumer imagers. CyberLink is mostly associated with Windows, and PhotoDirector is the only cross platform item in the company’s suite of multimedia prosumer apps.

Like many of CyberLink’s Windows apps, PhotoDirector 10 has its own brand of sizzle that may prove appealing to Mac users, especially those interested in turning their photos into works of art.
